Anna Brown works from her home studio in the Great Lakes area of NSW. Inspiration comes from the local bushland and lake.
Anna is currently working on two series of quilts: Canopy and Reflections. Shifting patterns of light through leaves or across water is the common thread linking the two series.
Initially, nothing is planned in too much detail. The work and ideas grow as she cuts and manipulates the fabric — natural commercially dyed cotton, and silk or wool. Anna loves the process of discovery as the work progresses. She uses strong colour contrasts for maximum graphic impact, which often highlights her patterns in silhouette.
The abstraction of images in Anna’s quilts, gives the viewer a fleeting glimpse of light and shade either through a tree’s canopy or reflections on water. Her hand quilting intensifies movement and highlights shapes in her quilt designs.
Anna loves designing and making contemporary art quilts, while still incorporating traditional sewing techniques.
See Anna’s artwork in The New Quilt on exhibition at Hawkesbury Regional Gallery, Windsor, NSW from 5 February to 11 April 2021 and in Quilt National 28 May – 6 September 2021.
